Qualifications & General Profile

B A Honours Degree in Recreation Management, Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management – ILAM Certificate & Diploma, Institute of Sport and Recreation Management ISRM Member, Adult Education Teaching Certificate.

Involved with Swimming for as long as I can remember. First joined a competitive Swimming club (Barnsley) at the age of 12 (quite late by today’s standards)! Moved to Rotherham Metro by the age of 14 through a Swim School of Excellence scheme  in 1982.

By the age of 15 I won my first County Championships and North Eastern County (NEC) Championships for 100 & 200m Breaststroke. Went on to gain medals in consecutive National Championships and was selected to represent the English Youth squad in 1984/5. Continued to swim competitively through into my late teens and represented both Yorkshire and NEC at all levels winning the Senior English Schools title in 1986.

Whilst I completed my A levels I gained numerous Leisure related qualifications which I put to good use whilst completing my further education which included a B A Honours degree in Recreation Management. Whilst completing my university degree I became more involved with coaching and organising the University Swim Team at a student level through into my early 20’s.

Following the completion of my degree in 1990 I gained full time employment at the Barnsley Metrodome Leisure Complex and managed the complexes events and activity programmes. I also undertook the position of chief swim coach to my first club – Barnsley Amateur Swim Club.

I decided to gain more operational facility management experience and moved to Derby in 1992 as Assistant Manager of The Queens Leisure Centre. This move also proved to mark the end of my competitive swimming career. One of my main achievements was to establish the centre as the first ASA Education Centre in Derbyshire and I went on to gain further aquatic based qualifications.

Following the birth of my first child Beth in 1996 my wife (who commuted to Sheffield each day to work) and I, decided to return closer to our more northern roots.

I undertook the job of Manager of Worksop Leisure Centre early in 1997 and following a major restructure in 1998 took the Managers position at Retford Leisure Centre.

As facility manager I have worked closely with Retford Swim Club for many years on numerous projects and have gained a good working relationship with the club. During the last two years both my daughters have become members of the club and in turn I have been happy to help the club wherever possible. I became a member of the executive committee of the club in 2006/7. I also represent the clubs interests on the Bassetlaw Sports Forum and will continue to do so to the best of my ability as we move into the new Retford Leisure Centre from 7th January 2008.
